Seiko Presage SARX069 Crown Chronograph Limited 1,964
Seiko one of the most significant brands in watch manufacturing introduced the Seiko Presage SARX069/SARX071/SARX073 Crown Chronograph Limited 1 in 1964. This is a 12 ligne, hand wound chronograph movement produced by Suwa Seikosha.
Did you know the first Seiko wrist watch was made in 1924? This was after japan was hit by the Great Kanto Earthquake that destroyed the Seikosha factory plus the stocks. This halted the production of many pieces and this was in 1923. Hattori was so determined to rebuild the Seiko factory despite the massive losses and costs. A year later in 1924, he introduced to the world the first ever watch that had the name Seiko on its dial. Seiko is the abbreviation of Seikosha which means “House of Exquisite Workmanship”
The Seiko first crown chronograph was made in 1964. This was the beginning of a story which also begun with the 1964 Olympic games. They supplied more than 1200 wristwatches in the Olympic games and they made a commercial of their first ever chronograph watch the 1964 SARX069. The watch started the development of chronograph watched by Seiko. Being the initial or the first ever chronograph watch, Seiko has decided to reintroduce it to the market. They are making a limited edition of the watch. There will be production of only 1964 pieces of this watch to commemorate the year they manufactured the first ever Seiko chronograph watch.
This wristwatch has a column wheel that controls the whole start, stop and reset system. Also known as its caliber, the 5719-8992 features one pusher chronograph function that has horizontal coupling. The uniqueness of this Seiko brand is it has a mono pusher set up and a no elapsed time counter. Seiko integrated a black rotating bezel coupled with one minute increments that deal with the elapsed timing. This was the first ever Seiko chronograph in the market.
After about 50 years, Seiko has decided to celebrate their Promethean by bringing back a remake of their first ever chronograph wristwatch. They introduce different Seiko watches but our focus today is the SARX069.
Over the years, Seiko has gone through stages of refinement and development of its watchmaking skills. This SARX069 is a limited edition watch that will see a limited number of pieces hit the market. Seiko has developed its mechanical watchmaking skills as well leading to the creation of an all-mechanical collection of the Seiko brand. This new selection to be reintroduced in the market is the Presage with most of its cues and designs are borrowed lightly from the 1913 Laurel which had Arabic numerals and white enamel dial. The Presage design has however evolved with different designs and aesthetics and keeping it real on the pure mechanical prospects.
Back to the Presage SARX069, this is the latest variation of the Presage collection based on the first mechanical chronograph. It features a 41mm case with 11mm thickness making it slimmer as compared to other Chrono variants. The watch also has a full polished case back and mid case, a beveled lugs style which is an old school trick and a whole black one-minute bezel. The impeccable finishing with Zaratsu’s polishing through the whole casing alternates with a satin brushed top finishing and a full gloss polish on the bevel and sides. For time and date adjustments, the right side of the watch has the 3 o’clock signed crown.
The dome shaped sapphire crystal is tough enough shielding Seiko’s prowess in the dial work. At the center, there are tiny lumibrite blocks on the inner pie pan dial coupled with applied faceted hour markers. The hour markers on this Seiko has maintained the original 60’s look and design. The hour markers sit on the off dial and the rest of the inside dome has mate finishing.
The central hands and the minute’s track of the outer circumference are those of the original 60’s design. The watch also features a subtle date display set in between the three o’clock position and has no overlaps on the time tell. The dial balance has a vintage look and isn’t cluttered giving the wearer no problem while reading the time in a glance.
Now let’s flip the watch over. The Seiko Presage SARX069 has a top end auto caliber known as the 6R35. This is Seiko’s latest automatic caliber that is an upgrade from the previous workforce. The watch still operates from the 21,600 BPH or 3 Hertz with hand winding and hacking capabilities. The watch now has an upgrade of the power reserve from 50 hours to 70 hours compared to other versions.
The Seiko Presage now has a 3 link oyster steel bracelet giving the watch a beautiful finish. Its polished mainly and with polished sides as well. both the sides of the central link are also lined giving the watch a seamless feel and look.
This robust timepiece is limited to 1964 pieces. If you are looking for a mechanical timepiece which is a genuine and solid, the Seiko Presage doesn’t disappoint. In all aspects, the Presage delivers quality, timeliness and comfort to the wearer.
The Seiko Presage has an automatic hooded caliber hooded in the original heritage of the Seiko. This is a faithful design of the original Crown Chronograph. The well-defined Arabic numerals applied to the high quality bezel with fine minute gradations highlighted on this dial. To increase stability of the watch, the case has an inward tilted shape. With this, it rests comfortably and securely on the wrist increasing stability.
The high legibility dial ensure you can easily use the watch at any time during the day or night. It’s made through the use of Lumibrite in the separate indexes for better view at a glance. The inner surface has a non-reflective coating inside the sapphire glass improving the legibility further.
Remember this is a limited edition watch. This means the case back of each watch has the letters “Limited Edition” and the serial number of the watch inscribed. This is an assurance that this is a limited quantity edition. Also inscribed on the case back is the stainless steel and water resistant guarantee, country of manufacture and the brand or model number.
